Ruthie Collins on Sewing Projects …
So… (or should I say sew… hee hee!) I am a pretty crafty person. I can use power tools, distress a farmhouse table, I like to scrap book… ya know, the usual. When it comes to sewing, I’m (ahem…) mediocre… Ok, ok mediocre at best. But my mom loves to sew and is great at is! I can make a pair of simple curtains and sew them sort of straight. But I love projects and sewing is something I hope to become better at through the years! My mom showed me the basics when I was young and I’m so thankful to her for the skill and for gifting me my very own singer a few years back!
When renovating our airstream I knew the look I was going for as far as curtains and pillows would set me back a pretty penny so I decided to make them myself. I drove up to NY for the weekend and my mom and I knocked out the theater curtains for the stage area in the airstream. I wanted a linen look but was also considering burlap. So I was SO excited when I found Burlap Linen at Jo ann Fabrics! It was pretty expensive at $40 for a 60 x 48… (They were sold in individual packages, I guess people use them for rug backing???) Thankfully we had a bunch of 50% coupons. It was still more than I wanted to spend but it is just gorgeous fabric! It’s like burlap but softer and not smelly. Always a good thing:) Here’s my mom pinning the ruffles.
And here’s us sewing up a storm! She was sewing ruffles and I was surging the tie backs for the curtains…
This was my original inspiration for my curtains but I think I will love the finished product even more!
I’m also going to sew some pretty pillows for the seating areas in the airstream. It blows my mind that pillows can cost so much!!! Usually the ones I like are over $100… That’s just bananas. I’m gonna try to make some like these ones:)
What are some of your favorite sewing projects? Any recommendations?
